Get Organized After Traveling

When I get home after vacation or a short trip (even just a day trip), I always unpack EVERYTHING that same day (unless I get back way past bedtime). I do this partly because it feels SO good to wake up in an organized space, but also because... well... I just can't help it. You might say I'm a compulsive unpacker. Even if you aren't a compulsive unpacker like me, here are some tips to getting back to normal after traveling:

1. Do it one item or bag at a time.

It may be overwhelming when you look at the mass of shoes, purses, suitcases, trash, snacks, and other random stuff you have to put away. But just pick one thing and do it. That will give you some momentum to keep going.

2. Take Breaks

Do you need to shower, make dinner, or put kids to bed? Unpack one bag before and after each task. Do it in bursts. It'll be done before you know it.

3. Pick a logical order.

I unpack starting with the loose items: shoes, snacks, trash from the car, etc. Then I move on to my suitcase. Then I go through my smaller bags, toiletries, and my purse. I leave all "tasks" until the end (or at least I try). For example, if I have a piece of clothing that needs scrubbed out or I need to file a paper, I don't do it until I've put everything else away. If my method doesn't work for you, that's cool. Just find a way that helps you unpack efficiently and use it. More power to ya!

4. Don't forget to put your house in order too.

Some other things you might need to do when you get home besides unpacking your bags may include cleaning out the car (of trash and other small items), opening & dealing with mail, watering neglected plants, starting laundry, and/or cleaning (sometimes the house is DUUUUUUSTY!).

5. Don't kill yourself.

Traveling can really suck your energy. So, if you are exhausted or if it is late, don't worry about laundry or cleaning, just unpack the basics and head to bed.

6. Leave some until tomorrow.

If you tried the tips above and just can't do it (I get not everyone loves unpacking as much as I do), pick one bag or category to fully unpack (like maybe just your clothes) and then do the rest the next day. that is totally okay,

7. Don't procrastinate for more than 3 days.

It is difficult to feel at peace when you are constantly living out of suitcases (especially when you are no longer on vacation). So, make sure to unpack within at least 3 days of getting home. If you have a big family it may take that long to fully unpack. That is okay. But, don't wait for 3 weeks to unpack. Just don't do it! Even if it doesn't bother you, it probably bothers someone else in your family (unless you live alone then, well by all means live out of your suitcase... but if you are like that, I doubt you would be reading this blog.)
