7 Years, 6 Changes, and 1 Thing That's Stayed the Same

Elena's Declutter is 7 years old today! Happy Bizversary to me 🥂

When I started Elena's Declutter in 2019, I had a lot of ideas and not much certainty. Seven years later, almost everything about how I work looks different. Here's what changed, and the one thing that hasn't.

WHAT'S CHANGED:

1. My confidence

In 2019, I second-guessed everything: my pricing, my advice, whether I was "qualified" to be helping anyone. Somewhere along the way, that shifted. Experience was a big part of it, but so were the women I've worked with. They (YOU) have shown me over and over that this work matters. You love my advice. They desperately want me to be standing beside them even if we are both overwhelmed. Together, we can tackle their clutter. I no longer wonder whether I am qualified enough. I know for certain that you (my current and future clients) need me, even when I don't have the perfect answer right away. We can always find it together.

2. How I find clients

When I started, finding clients meant showing up in person. It meant asking my college friends if they needed help organizing (even though they had no money to pay me). I tried to meet new people in the community, but it was hard. Every client came from a conversation, and every conversation meant putting myself out there, which I am still working on being comfortable with (yes I'm actually quite a shy person and an introvert).

Now, a lot of the women I work with find me online first. Someone types a late-night search into her phone, something like "how do I start decluttering?" or "are there any professional organizers in Walla Walla?" and ends up here. She has already done the hardest part, which is admitting she wants a change, before we ever say hello. I love that. It means the words I put out into the world are doing some of the meeting for me.

3. My time commitment

In February 2025, I made the leap and started my business full time. For years, Elena's Declutter wasn't really paying the bills. I had another part time job. Now it has my full attention, which means more room to serve clients well, to build things I'm proud of, and to stop squeezing this work into whatever hours were left over.

4. My process

My process today barely resembles the one I started with. I've refined it through every home, every conversation, and every "this isn't working" moment. It's more intentional and efficient now.

6. My family

This year (2026), my family grew. Becoming a parent has changed my days, my priorities, and my sense of what "enough" looks like. It has also given me a fresh appreciation for why a decluttered home is so vital, especially for parents with young kids. Home is a place where you have to be able to take a deep breath and relax, especially when life is so full.
